We were so excited about heading out to Howick Village last week and sure enough we had a wonderful day. In the morning, we were kept busy with rotation of fun activities: parlour games, nursery rhymes, the school room, and outdoor games. After lunch we had the opportunity to explore the village which is really like a museum that's come alive.
Have a look at some photos from the day. Mrs Seath is so pleased that the slideshow has finally uploaded!!

Friction
We are learning to describe friction...
Overall I think that friction is about stopping things, slowing things down, and rubbing things together, because friction can do that to everything and that is the most important thing. - Leila
The most important thing about friction is stopping, because if you don't have friction you will slip all over the ground. - Casey
I think that in the future they will invent shoes that never slip on wet ground. - Jaz
I think that in the future, lots of people will understand how to use friction. Some smart people already know how you can use it to help you. - Hawon
Friction is a force that can help you do your job. Friction can also cause trouble when you're doing your job. - Grace
Overall, friction is a force that happens when two or more objects rub together. - Ryan

Painting Like Pollock
We've been learning about the famous abstract expressionist artist, Jackson Pollock. He was an action painter who loved to move around as he painted and cared more about the process of painting than the end product. Have a look at this old video footage of Pollock at work.
We tried out some painting in Pollock's style. We worked in groups to complete an art work. Here are the results...

Yesterday afternoon Room 9 did some painting like Jackson Pollock. We went outside in our art shirts. There were lots of pots of bright paint and we used sticks to flick the paint on the paper. Our paintings look bright and have lots of blobs of colours on them. - Lucy
How to Paint Like Pollock (by Ashane)
Materials
- a stick
- large canvas
- paint (any colour)
- broken glass
Steps
1. Take your canvas outside and make sure it's not windy.
2. Dip the stick in any paint colour.
3. Flick the stick around the paper.
4. Make sure you hold the canvas tight so it doesn't fly away.
5. Leave it to dry somewhere warm.
My Pollock Experience (by Angela)
It was fun. I learned that you can never rush art. I got a blue face because I was flicking too hard and it splattered on my face. It looked like I had a mask on. It felt exciting, but strange because it wasn't like the art I do at home, just drawing pictures. I feel that Jackson Pollock's artwork is amazing and exciting and you don't have to care what other people think.
